Blackhawks vs. Ducks final score 2017: Jonathan Bernier snaps Chicago’s 7-game win streak
It’s the first loss for Chicago since Feb. 18.
The Chicago Blackhawks outshot the Anaheim Ducks 43-26, but Corey Perry scored and Jonathan Bernier stopped all 43 shots he saw for a 1-0 shutout win to snap Chicago’s seven-game win streak.
Chicago entered the game off a four-day break and fall to 1-5 this season when playing with three or more days off. It’s the first loss for Chicago since a 3-1 setback against Edmonton on Feb. 18 at home, which came after the team’s bye week.
The Hawks remain one point behind Minnesota for first place in the Western Conference. The Wild loss 4-1 to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Here’s how it happened:
First Period
The Hawks got off to fast start with a flurry of shots and quality scoring chances by Tanner Kero and Ryan Hartman. But Bernier came through time and time again keeping the game scoreless. Chicago continued to skate circles around the Ducks and find scoring chances, including a five-shot power play. When the horn sounded for the period Chicago held a 19-2 shot advantage.
Second Period
The second period got off to a comical start when Nick Schmaltz lost his skate blade and stumbled then crawled his way to the bench before Artemi Panarin pushed him to the bench with his stick.
After killing off an interference penalty by Johnny Oduya, who was making his first start since being reacquired from Dallas, the Hawks made themselves at home in the Ducks’ zone for more than 2 minutes. But again, there was Bernier coming up with stop after stop.
Kero finally thought the Hawks had broken through and he had scored, even raising his hands in celebration, but “the goal” was waved off and played continued. Seconds later, Corey Perry slipped a shot past Corey Crawford in the slot for a 1-0 lead at 17:44. It was Perry’s 12th goal this season and first since Feb. 9.
Third Period
The pace of the game dropped off significantly in the third. Anaheim’s Andrew Coligno had a few chances in front, but Crawford kept him at bay.
Panarin and Jonathan Toews generated a few chances in the waining minutes with Crawford pulled, but Bernier held on for the shutout.
