Blackhawks vs. Stars final score 2017: Panarin’s shootout goal, Corey Crawford lead Chicago win over Dallas

Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin scored in the shootout and Corey Crawford made 42 saves to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night at United Center.

Kane scored a power-play goal and Marian Hossa also found the back of the net in regulation for Chicago (48-20-6), who swept the five-game season series against Dallas.

With the win, Chicago increased its lead atop the Central Division and Western Conference to eight points over the Minnesota. The Wild (44-23-6) lost 3-1 to Philadelphia on Thursday at home.

Ales Hemsky tallied both Dallas goals in regulation, but was stopped by Crawford in third round of the shootout as the netminder recorded his 30th win this season. Crawford also stopped Jamie Benn in the shootout, while Tyler Seguin was able to slip the puck past him.

Here’s what happened:

First Period

The Hawks opened the scoring when Kane scored his 33rd goal of the season off a feed from Richard Panik on the power play at 8 minutes, 13 seconds of the first frame. Kane and Panik went in on a two-on-one rush and Kane buried the puck five-hole for a 1-0 lead.

Patrick Sharp looked poised to even the score on a breakaway, but he was unable to corral the puck to fire off a shot.

With little help from the Hawks defense, Crawford made 10 saves in the first 10 minutes of the period. The defense stepped up on the backside of the period only allowing three Dallas shots.

Second Period

It was a slow start to the second frame with the team’s exchanging icing calls.

With Ryan Hartman in the penalty box for a tripping penalty, Crawford continued to keep the Hawks in the game with big save after big save., including stopping trade deadline acquisition Jiri Hudler.

After exiting the box, Hartman found Dan Hamhuis and the pair dropped the gloves as the rookie tried to ignite some life into the game. Hartman and Hamhuis both were assessed a five-minute fighting penalties. The fight ignited the game, but just not the way Hartman had planned. Hemsky beat Crawford in front of the net to tie the game 1-1 just 40 seconds after the scuffle.

Third Period

Kane had a similar issue to Sharp in the early going of the third period. Tanner Kero, who signed a two-year extension earlier in the day, send a feed to Kane but he was unable to tame the puck and sent it wide on an open net.

Hossa gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with a wrister past Kari Lehtonen at 8:37 with a terrific screen by Marcus Kruger. Trevor van Riesmdyk recorded an assist on the goal to set a new career-high in points at 15 in his 50th game this season. He had 14 points in 82 games in 2015-16.

Dallas looked to tie the game when Devin Shore wristed a shot to the net, but Crawford came up big once again with a glove save to maintain the lead. It didn’t last long though as Hemsky tapped in his second of the game on a rebound to make it 2-2 with five minutes remaining.

Panarin drew a tripping penalty with 54.8 second left in regulation, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize as the game went to overtime with 1:06 left on the man advantage.

Overtime/shootout

Kane rang a shot off the post as the Hawks lone clean shot on the power play before it expired. Crawford made six saves, including one on a breakaway by Remi Elie.

In the shootout, Chicago was 2 for 3. Toews missed in the first round and Seguin seaked a shot past Crawford to make it 1-0 Dallas.

Then Patrick Kane did Patrick Kane things.

Crawford stopped Benn before Panarin netted the eventual game-winner.

SCH 3 Stars:

  1. Crawford, Chicago (42 saves)
  2. Kane, Chicago (2 goals, including one in shootout)
  3. Hemsky, Dallas (2 goals)
