Blackhawks sign forward Pat Maroon

The Blackhawks continued their signing frenzy on Monday, adding another depth forward in three-time Stanley Cup champion and veteran forward Pat Maroon.

The team confirmed the news Monday afternoon:

The initial report came from Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff:

This might not be a popular signing considering Maroon’s age of 36 and declining play in recent years, but he does bring a winning pedigree to the Blackhawks. In his only season with the Blues, Maroon helped them win the Stanley Cup in 2019, and then went on to win the Cup twice more in the next two years with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021. By doing so, he became one of only 12 players in NHL history to win back-to-back Stanley Cups on different teams, and became the first player to win three consecutive Stanley Cups since several members of the New York Islanders did so in the early 1980s.

Beyond that, the 6-foot-4, 234-pound Maroon will likely be expected to play in a physical, bottom-six role with the Blackhawks. His offense has been limited the last two seasons: he had 14 points (5 G, 4 A) in 80 games in his last season with the Lightning in 2022-23 and then registered 16 points (4 G, 12 A) in 49 games with the Minnesota Wild last season before being traded to Boston. With the Bruins, Maroon only played in two regular-season games, but suited up for 13 games in the playoffs and added two assists.
