Near the end of Friday’s opening round of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks made a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes to add a third pick and selected Minnesota native Mason West with the No. 29 pick.

West will be a senior at Edina High School in Minnesota this fall, where he’s expected to be a quarterback this fall before he hangs up his cleats for good and embarks on a hockey career as a 6-foot-6, 215-pound center.
MASON WEST! The quarterback goes 29th overall. He's also a 6-foot-6 center who will play football next fall before going to the USHL and then it's on to Michigan State. High-risk, high-reward. He's never had full-time focus on hockey. That could change next spring.

Here’s a sample of West’s work on the football field as a QB:
Lost in the shuffle of some awesome plays this week, what a fantastic TD connection between @MasonWest2026 and @StraderJabari!

On the ice, West is expected to join the USHL’s Fargo Force once he’s done with football, where he’ll remain for the rest of the 2025-26 season. And then he’s expected to head to Michigan State for the 2026-27 season.
Hopefully this pick trends in the same direction as a pick Chicago spent on another Minnesota teenager earlier this decade:
The Blackhawks reached a bit with high-schooler Sam Rinzel at No. 25 a few years ago. That one seems to have worked out pretty well.

West is on a similar long-term path of professional development as Rinzel, so don’t expect to see him in a Chicago uniform in the next few seasons.
Here are the terms of the trade that gave Chicago the pick it used on West:
