Blackhawks prospect Alec Regula expects to sign in November

Blackhawks defenseman prospect Alec Regula told Scott Powers of The Athletic on Wednesday that he’s “pretty confident” he’ll sign an entry-level contract in November.

Chicago acquired Regula on Monday from the Red Wings in exchange for NHL winger Brendan Perlini. Regula, a third-round pick in 2018, did not sign with Detroit prior to the trade, and his draft rights expire in June 2020.

The 19-year-old Regula has four goals and 11 points in 10 OHL games this season with the London Knights while skating on the top pairing with Sharks 2018 first rounder Ryan Merkley. Regula, a right-handed shot, played with Chicago 2018 first rounder Adam Boqvist last season in London.

“Oh yeah, (Regula) called me right when he got traded,” Boqvist told Second City Hockey on Wednesday night after the Rockford IceHogs’ 6-2 win over the San Antonio Rampage in the AHL. “He’s a really good d-man, really good person as well and I’m excited for him and he’s excited.

“Hopefully we’ll get to play with each other in the future.”

Boqvist said Regula brings more than size (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) to the blue line.

“I think he actually has pretty good hands for a big d-man,” Boqvist said. “He has a good hockey IQ as well and he’s a great teammate. I saw he started the season pretty good with a lot of points. He’s a pretty much all-around d-man, but a little bit more stay-at-home. He can score and be on the power play as well, so I think he’ll be good with the Blackhawks.”
