Blackhawks place Andrew Shaw in concussion protocol

The Blackhawks placed their third player this season under concussion protocol Tuesday with forward Andrew Shaw.

Shaw skated 14:10 minutes in the Blackhawks’ 7-3 loss to the Avalanche on Saturday in Denver, but did not play in Chicago’s 4-0 loss to the Blues on Monday. The Blackhawks said Monday morning he was “undergoing further evaluation,” but did not give specifics as to what the potential injury was.

Shaw was on the receiving end of a high stick to the face by Ryan Graves at 18:37 of the first period Saturday, one day after the two were involved in a fight. Graves was assessed a double-minor penalty as the stick drew blood from Shaw’s nose, but the Blackhawks did not score on the man advantage. Shaw, who has three goals and 10 points in 26 games this season, did play the rest of the game after the incident.

Shaw joins teammates Drake Caggiula and Dylan Strome in concussion protocol. Both Caggiula and Strome have returned to skating in practice. Caggiula is on long-term injured reserve and is eligible to return Thursday in Boston, while Strome hasn’t been placed on LTIR or IR while he’s been out since Nov. 23.
