Blackhawks promote AHL assistant coach Sheldon Brookbank to NHL staff

The Blackhawks promoted AHL assistant coach Sheldon Brookbank to an NHL assistant on coach Jeremy Colliton’s staff, the team announced Friday.

Colliton now has three assistant coaches with Brookbank, Don Granto and Barry Smith. Brookbank worked with defensemen and the penalty kill with the Rockford IceHogs since being hired in June 2017.

Anders Sorenson, who is in his fifth season as development coach for the Blackhawks, will replace Brookbank as an assistant under interim head coach Derek King.

Brookbank signed a two-year contract as a free agent with Chicago in July 2012 then went on to win the Stanley Cup with the team in 2013. The defenseman scored three goals and eight points in 74 games across two seasons with Chicago. He added two assists in eight playoff games during those two seasons.

Brookbank played in 351 career NHL games and posted seven goals and 44 points, along with 473 penalty minutes during parts of eight seasons with Nashville, New Jersey, Anaheim and Chicago from 2006-14.

The 43-year-old Sorenson spent the 2014-15 season as the head coach for the Chicago Mission under-16 team and the 2010-11 season as the head coach of the Mission’s U18 club. He also has experience as an assistant coach with the Swedish Hockey League’s Södertälje from 2011-13 before serving as interim head coach in October 2013.
