Chicago looks to notch a win over their rivals before their “bye week”
The Chicago Blackhawks face the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon at the United Center in Chicago. After defeating Winnipeg Jets on Friday night, the Hawks look to earn their fourth win in five games.
Newly acquired winger Anthony Duclair made his presence known early in his tenure with Chicago (22-16-6), as he was involved in both scoring plays from Friday’s victory over the Central Division leaders. His linemate David Kampf was one of two goal scorers in the contest, which was his first career NHL goal. Defensemen Jan Rutta and Jordan Oesterle also had quality performances, which kept the Hawks on pace with the Wild Card race. Nobody was as good as Jeff Glass though, as the 32 year old rookie goaltender racked up 31 saves in his first home victory as a Hawk. Glass will start in goal again today, as Chicago looks to grab a victory before getting next week off.
Detroit (17-18-7) limps into the contest on the heels of a loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday afternoon, their second consecutive loss. The Red Wings will be without Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkater, as both are recovering from lower body injuries. They have called up Dominic Turgeon from Grand Rapids to join the third line. Turgeon was a third round pick in 2014, and has nine goals in 23 games so far this season in the AHL. Detroit’s leading scorer is Anthony Mantha, with 14 goals so far this season.
While Jimmy Howard has been a little better than “average” so far this year, he might get to rest as this is the second of back to back games for Detroit. However, their backup goaltender Petr Mrazek has been shaky this season. He’s only been able to compile a .885 save percentage with a goals against average of over 3.7.
These two teams face will face each other for the 815th time, and the 408th time in Chicago. Since 2010, the Blackhawks have a 23-14-0 record against their rivals from Motown. Chicago is 197-160-51 at the United Center all time in the rivalry, with a 12-7-0 record this decade.
