Fredrik Olofsson signs 1-year contract with MODO Hockey in Sweden

Frederick Olofsson is going home to Sweden.

He’ll play for MODO Hockey in Sweden’s second division, HockeyAllsvenskan, after signing a one-year contract with the club Tuesday.

“It is a big, physically strong player who can play both the center and the outer forward. Olofsson has a fantastic game play and is a player who is to strengthen our offensive production,” MODO Hockey’s head coach Björn Hellkvist said in a release.

Olofsson, who was drafted by the Blackhawks in the fourth round in 2014, did not record a point in the two games he played for the Rockford IceHogs on a professional tryout contract after his collegiate career ended at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound left winger scored 10 goals and 34 points in 36 games during his senior season for the Mavericks. Olofsson, who turns 23 on May 27, tallied 95 points (35 goals, 60 assists) in 137 NCAA career games.

With Olofsson’s departure from the Blackhawks organization, general manager Stan Bowman’s nine-player 2014 draft class dwindles to three players still in the fold. Nick Schmaltz, who was traded to Arizona in November, and Dylan Sikura are the only ones to see NHL playing time. Russian goalie Ivan Nalimov is playing with Avangard Omsk in the KHL and right winger Jack Ramsey scored one goal in four games with the Indy Fuel in the EHCL after his senior season at Minnesota.
