Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman will head to Vancouver with six picks for the NHL draft, which is June 21-22.
Here’s how he acquired them:
First round — No. 3
Chicago entered the NHL draft lottery with the No. 12 pick and a 3 percent chance to land the No. 3 overall pick. The Blackhawks ended up with the No. 3 pick for the first time since 2006, when they selected captain Jonathan Toews.
Second round — No. 43
This is Chicago’s own pick.
Third round — None
The Blackhawks do not have a third-round pick after they traded theirs (No. 74) to Arizona last July as part of the Marian Hossa deal.
Fourth round — Nos. 105, 123
Chicago holds two picks in the fourth round. The first one (No. 105) is their own and the second one is a conditional pick acquired from the Bruins in the Tommy Wingels trade in February 2018. It was initially a fifth-round pick, but Boston met the conditional agreements to elevate it to a fourth-round pick when it won a playoff round in 2018 and Wingels played in at least one playoff game.
Fifth round — None
The Blackhawks traded their own pick (No. 136) to the Canadiens at last year’s draft for Florida’s fifth-round pick (No. 139). The Blackhawks used that pick on center Mikael Hakkarainen, who is expected to play in the AHL next season after he signed a three-year entry-level contract in April. The fifth-round pick Chicago acquired in the Hossa deal was sent to the Kings in January for the rights to winger Dominik Kubalik, who signed a one-year deal with Chicago in May and is projected to play in the NHL next season.
Chicago obtained the Lightning’s fifth-round pick (No. 151) as a result of a trade in January that sent defenseman Jan Rutta and a 2019 seventh-round pick to Tampa Bay in exchange for defenseman Slater Koekkoek and this pick. Bowman then traded the pick and winger Dominik Kahun to the Penguins in exchange for left-handed defenseman Olli Maatta.
Sixth round — No. 167
This is the Blackhawks’ pick.
Seventh round — No. 194
Chicago will select a player four spots ahead of where it would’ve with its own pick that was sent to Tampa Bay. The Blackhawks have the Ducks’ seventh-round pick as a result of a March 2017 trade that sent forwards Spencer Abbott and Sam Carrick to Anaheim in exchange for forward Kenton Helgesen and this pick.
