Marian Hossa becomes highest-scoring Slovakian in NHL history

Marian Hossa has rewritten the history books again.

The Chicago Blackhawks winger scored twice in a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night, surpassing former Hawk Peter Bondra to become the top-scoring Slovakian player in NHL history.

Bondra was born in Ukraine, so technically Hossa already held this mark but Bondra is listed as a Slovakian player due to his play internationally.

Hossa tied Bondra with his 503rd career NHL goal to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first period. He surpassed Bondra with his next tally 55 seconds into the second period.

The 37-year-old is the 44th player to score 500 NHL career goals and is fourth among active players in goals scored. Hossa reached the milestone Oct. 18 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Bondra and Hossa both hit the 500-goal mark in a Blackhawks sweater as did Michael Goulet and Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita.

Hossa achieved the record in 1,246 games, while Bondra needed only 1,081 games to score 503 goals.
