Blackhawks sign Matt Tomkins to 2-year, $1.4 million contract

The Blackhawks signed minor-league goaltender Matt Tomkins to a two-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 per season that runs through the 2020-21 season Thursday. Tomkins will remain with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL.

Tomkins is 5-4 with a team-best 2.45 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in nine games with Rockford. The 25-year-old also made 22 saves to help Canada defeat HC Davos 5-1 in group play en route to winning the Spengler Cup in December. He was of the ECHL’s best goaltenders last season with a 29-19-4 record, 3.04 GAA and .905 save percentage and two shutouts.

The Blackhawks drafted Tomkins in the seventh round (199th overall) in the 2012 NHL draft. Prior to starting his professional career, Tomkins appeared in 47 games with a career-best 12 wins and 2.48 GAA during his senior season at Ohio State. He’s 6-8-2 with a 3.17 GAA and .895 save percentage in parts of two seasons with Rockford.

Tomkins and Collin Delia are the only Chicago goaltenders under NHL contracts past the 2019-20 season. Corey Crawford and Robin Lehner are both set to be unrestricted free agents after the season, while AHL goalie Kevin Lankinen would be an RFA.
