Patrick Kane made history once again Sunday night by scoring his 1,000 NHL point with an assist on Brandon Saad’s goal in third period of the Blackhawks’ 5-2 win against the Jets at the United Center in Chicago.
Kane (31 years, 61 days) is the youngest United States-born player to reach the milestone, ahead of Jeremy Roenick (32 years, 13 days). The right wing has 380 goals and 620 assists in 953 games in 13 seasons, all with the Blackhawks. Three other players have had 1,000 points with the Blackhawks (Stan Mikita, 1,467; Bobby Hull, 1,153; and Denis Savard, 1,096)
The play
The breakdown
The play started in the Blackhawks zone as Slater Koekkoek skated in front of Blake Wheeler to prevent the Jets captain from getting to Kane before Kane sent a pass to Olli Maatta, who then sent a pass to Koekkoek, who fired the puck to center ice. There, Ryan Carpenter chipped the puck on his backhand past Jack Roslovic and into the Jets zone.
Neal Pionk chased down the puck behind the Jets net, and looked over his right shoulder to see Carpenter barring down. Once Pionk saw Carpenter he knew a potential pass to Luca Sbisa wouldn’t work, so he opted to send the puck off the left wall past Kane in hopes of clearing it out of the Jets zone. Roslovic wasn’t able to get to the puck and it went to the left point where Erik Gustafsson was.
Gustafsson kept the puck in the zone and rimmed it along the boards past Roslovic to Kane, while Carpenter and Saad cycled in the zone to set up for the goal.
Kane then beat Sbisa to the puck and passed from behind the net to Carpenter in the bottom of the right face-off circle, and he sent the puck across the goalmouth to Saad, who was left open for a tap-in goal.
