Blackhawks prospect Mathias From signs professional tryout contract with IceHogs

The Rockford IceHogs announced Thursday they signed forward Mathias From to a professional tryout contract. The deal brings the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2016 fifth-round pick to North America, although not on a NHL contract.

From, 20, scored two goals with three assists in 21 games this season for Roglke BK in the Swedish Hockey League. He also spent some time in Sweden’s second league, Allsvenskan, where he also had the same point production in 23 contests with Södertälje SK and AIK. He again had equaled his offensive figures in five playoffs games with AIK.

The Danish forward caught the hockey world’s attention at the World Junior Championship, where he scored twice and had one assists in three games in 2017. One of his goals was the game-winning goal in an upset against Czech Republic.

From, who is listed at 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, is a right-handed shot, but can play at either wing spot. The IceHogs are fighting for a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs. Rockford has won five straight games and is only three points back of Central Division leading Chicago Wolves and only two points back of second- and third-place teams Manitoba and Grand Rapids, respectively, in the Central Division.
