Adam Boqvist, Drake Caggiula injured in Blackhawks’ loss to Blues

The Blackhawks lost two players to injury in the second period against the Blues on Sunday.

Chicago defenseman Adam Boqvist skated to the boards in the Blackhawks’ defensive zone to play the puck and St. Louis forward Oskar Sundqvist swung his left arm and connected with Boqvist’s face after missing an initial checking attempt. Boqvist — who missed Friday’s game against the Red Wings with a right wrist injury — dropped to the ice in obvious discomfort and later skated to the bench under his own power.

Sundqvist was initially given a major penalty but, after an official review, the penalty was reduced to a two-minute minor for elbowing.

Chicago placed Boqvist in concussion protocol.

The confrontation between Boqvist and Sundqvist triggered a melee between the other players on the ice, which culminated with a fight between Blackhawks forward Drake Caggiula and Blues defenseman Vince Dunn. At the end of the fight, Dunn appeared to catch Caggiula with a punch that sent Caggiula down to the ice.

Caggiula, who was out of the lineup for two months after suffering a concussion during a Nov. 10 game against Toronto, appeared to be OK as he gestured towards the crowd while skating to the bench. However, he did not return to the game and injured his right hand in the fight. The severity of the injury is unknown.
