Midnight City: Blackhawks at Golden Knights Preview

Rolling in on snake eyes.

The Chicago Blackhawks wrap up their two-game road trip against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night. It’s going to be a late one — a 9 p.m. CT puck drop — but maybe the Hawks can build off of their two-game win streak?

That may be unlikely given that the Golden Knights have no issues steamrolling weaker teams. Vegas has, however, failed to find success in beating playoff-caliber opponents. Since November, Vegas has only won six games against teams in a playoff spot (as of this writing). That’s through the course of 55 games played since November. Their record in 66 games played is 30-22-14 and only the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Los Angeles Kings have more overtime points than the Golden Knights. It’s a suspect record, but the Knights are still second in the Pacific Division with 74 points, only one point behind the Anaheim Ducks.

On offense, Jack Eichel leads the team in points with 74 (24 G, 50 A) through 58 games played, Mitch Marner is right behind him with 67 points (19 G, 48 A), and Pavel Dorofeyev leads in goals with 32 (22 A, 54 P). Mark Stone continues to be a menace from the goal line with 60 points (21 G, 39 A) as he recently returned from injury after missing six games. On the blue line, Shea Theodore leads in points with 31 (7 G, 24 A), and Noah Hanafin has 22 points (3 G, 19 A). Rasmus Andersson has six points (1 G, 5 A) in 17 games with Vegas since being traded from the Calgary Flames. That trade saw Vegas send Zach Whitecloud to Calgary on Jan. 18. Andersson (who has 36 points from both clubs) brings much-needed firepower to the Vegas blue line.

On the topic of trades, center Nic Dowd was acquired from the Washington Capitals in return for goaltender prospect Jesper Vickman (alongside a 2027 third and a 2029 second) on March 5. Winger Cole Smith was traded from the Nashville Predators for Christoffer Sedoff and a 2028 third-round pick on March 3. Outside of the Andersson trade, those were the other moves Vegas made ahead of the deadline. For injuries, goaltender Carter Hart is on long-term injured reserve, center William Karlsson is month-to-month, defenseman Alex Pietrangelo is out for the season, and 26-year-old forward Jonas Rondbjerg is day-to-day.

Vegas is hot off a 6-2 win over the Penguins (one of the few playoff teams the Knights have defeated) on Thursday night at home, its first win after losing three straight. That game was also the first of four straight at home for VGK. Their lineup from that win over Pittsburgh is below:

For Chicago, they’re fresh and giddy off a two-game win streak, both overtime victories and both against the Utah Mammoth. The Hawks were outpossessed in both games and required Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar to pull the team to victory. Blashill will most likely keep things similar, which means Nick Lardis playing in a diminished role while Andre Burakovsky continues to play alongside Bedard. It’s not that I have to see Lardis with Bedard (although that would be nice), but playing Lardis in an elevated role just to see wouldn’t hurt. I mean, that turnover from Burakovsky that led to Utah’s goal on Thursday night was disgusting.

Wyatt Kaiser departed that Thursday game with an apparent shoulder injury and won’t play in this game, based on what Blashill told assembled media after the morning skate. It appears Ethan Del Mastro will take his spot. The rest of the lineup from the morning skate is below:

The last time these two met (back on Jan. 14), both Nazar and Bedard were out with injuries. The Hawks still managed to win 3-2 in overtime with Tyler Bertuzzi grabbing his second hat trick of the season. That’s the issue for the Hawks. Outside of Bedard, Bertuzzi, or recently, Nazar (seven points in five games), Chicago doesn’t have anyone who can consistently contribute to offense. Maybe Lardis could be that guy? He certainly finds the right areas of the ice. It would be nice for the Hawks to get a three-game win streak tonight and see some scoring from the other young players on the roster.

Let’s go Hawks.
