Chris Chelios Gets His Call

There was no doubt in my mind that Chris Chelios was a slam dunk to get his call to the HHOF today. Chelios was a 3 time Stanley Cup winner, 3 time Norris winner and an 11 time All Star during his 26 year NHL career. He was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens, in June of 1990, for the very popular Denis Savard. Chelios’ style of play and performance on the ice would quickly make him become one of the most beloved Blackhawks of all time. He proudly wore the C on his sweater for 4 seasons.

One of the saddest days of being a Blackhawks fan was March 23,1999 when Chelios was traded to the hated Detroit Red Wings for Andres Eriksson and two 1st round draft picks. Those picks turned into Adam Munro and Steve McCarthy. So, all in all, we gave away the greatest defenseman the Hawks ever had for nothing. Seeing Chelios wearing the Wings jersey made most Blackhawks fans sick to their stomach. Some fans still hold a grudge against Cheli, which I will never understand. I know he said he’d never play for the Wings, but do you really blame him? I sure don’t.

When his career was all said and done he went down as one of the greatest Americans to ever play the game. He made me proud of my team and my city. Now that the anger of playing for Detroit has vanished over the years, I am very happy I got to see Chelios in his prime. He was an absolute joy to watch wearing the Indian Head.
