Ex-Blackhawks forward Michal Handzus signs in Europe

Michal Handzus is lacing up his skates once again.

The former Chicago Blackhawks forward is returning to his native Slovakia to play with Banska Bystrica, of the Slovakian Extraliga, the team announced Tuesday.

Handzus, 39, scored 16 points in 59 regular season games, and three points in 19 playoff contests last season for the Blackhawks. In two seasons with Chicago, he recorded 30 points (8G, 22A) in 78 games.

Handzus won his first and only Stanley Cup in 2013 with the Blackhawks, and was the first off the plane from Boston to hoist the second Cup in four years in the Windy City.

“Zeus” was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 1995 NHL draft, complied 493 points and played over 1,000 games with the Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and the Blackhawks.
