Help Wanted: Second City Hockey looking for additional contributors

UPDATE (Sept. 24): Hey everyone, so there were a ton of applications to join the SCH writing team this month and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to reach out. It’s flattering and humbling and frankly it was more than I ever expected. I’ve read every one of your submissions — however, it’s way too many to respond to everyone personally.

E-mails have been sent out over the past few days to a number of folks and we should have something resembling a fuller staff by the start of the season. Again, I’m appreciative to everyone who’s taken the time to reach out. This probably won’t be the last time I look for help on the site, either, and things like FanPosts can always be a great platform for showing your Hawks writing skills.

We’re excited to watch another season of hockey with you here, and maybe even learn some stuff in the process. Fun will definitely be had, that much is for certain with the team we root for. So don’t be discouraged if we didn’t get back to you, just keep writing and we’ll see what happens.

Thanks!

— Satchel

***

We’re only a few weeks away from the beginning of the 2014-15 NHL season, but the dust has only recently cleared from the leadership change here. I hope you guys have enjoyed the stuff we’ve rolled out so far, but with so much more action to cover in the near future, Second City Hockey could use some extra help.

So here at SCH we’re putting out the call to any and all Blackhawks writers who might be interested in contributing to the site for the upcoming season. Whether you’re interested in features, news stories, covering games, social media or something else awesome, we’re interested in seeing what you have to offer.

What’s in it for you?

To be clear, this isn’t a paid gig, unfortunately. While SCH is constantly expanding and the support of SB Nation allows us to do some very cool things, there will be no financial compensation for your work. However, I will say that this is a legitimate opportunity to reach new audiences and writers from across SB Nation have eventually worked into much larger roles. I got my start as a writer at Beyond the Box Score, SBN’s sabermetrics blog, for example. So if you’re an aspiring writer looking for more eyes or simply someone who wants to get in on the conversation, this is a great way to begin. I’m also very much committed to the website and helping my writers in whatever ways they need (but no I won’t pick up your groceries), and this is ultimately about having fun SO WE’LL DEFINITELY DO THAT (possible pizza party).

First, some important criteria:

  • Must be a Blackhawks fan. You don’t need to be in Chicago, but you should probably have the ability to watch most games.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of the sport of hockey and the NHL as a league
  • Must have ability to support ideas and opinions in writing
  • Must be willing to commit to some kind of schedule, whether it’s covering every game or contributing one feature a month. Also need to check e-mail at least somewhat regularly; as staff grows, a group e-mail will likely be used to ease communication.
  • Must be willing to interact and engage with readers. SCH has one of the strongest communities among SBN’s hockey blogs and we aim to continue fostering a welcoming environment./

And some other stuff that will earn you bonus points:

  • Being an active member of the SCH community
  • Journalism experience
  • A good sense of humor
  • DANCE SKILLZ (may or may not be actual criteria)/

Finally, how to apply:

Send an e-mail with at least one writing sample to SecondCityHockey@gmail.com. Use “SCH application” or something similar in the subject line. Ideally, candidates will also include a resume and/or list of prior writing experience, as well as any prominent social media accounts they use (specifically Twitter).

So, that’s pretty much it! A couple other writers have already agreed to join the staff along with Randy and I for the upcoming season, but we’ll need more folks to cover this team the way I believe it deserves to be covered. Apply now and I look forward to reading everyone’s submissions. I can’t make an immediate promise on how quickly I’ll be able to get back to everyone — I have no idea how many people will actually apply — but I’ll definitely do my best to keep everyone updated.

Thanks, and go Hawks!
