Into the Flood Again: Blackhawks vs. Kraken Preview

Another night at the UC, with some vengeance available.

The Blackhawks continue their home-heavy portion of their schedule in the back half of November on Thursday night, hosting the Seattle Kraken at the United Center.

These two teams met a few weeks ago in the Pacific Northwest during a Hawks’ road trip, with the Kraken taking a 3-1 victory in a game that saw the Hawks turn in a decent performance despite that unfortunate result. Chicago seemed to have the better of the scoring opportunities in that game, but Seattle always seemed to have a skate or a stick or a body arrive just in time to thwart those chances. The Hawks haven’t lost in regulation since, boasting a 5-0-1 record following that defeat. The Kraken have been more of a mixed bag, with a 3-3-1 record over the same timeframe, most recently a 4-2 loss to the Red Wings in Detroit on Tuesday night. Seattle remains just outside of the playoff picture based on points alonr but sits third in the Pacific Division based on points percentage. It’d be fair to place both of these teams in the massive slog of franchises occupying the middle of the league standings, trailing front-runners like Colorado and Carolina but ahead of the bottom-feeders like Calgary and Buffalo, the latter of whom is Chicago’s opponent on Friday night.

Not much has changed in Seattle since we wrote about them for the preview of that game from earlier this month, save for a recent injury to Kaapo Kakko that landed him on injured reserve. Starting goalie Joey Daccord missed some time this month with an injury but was back in net against Detroit, although his numbers remain subpar: 6-3-3 record, .898 save percentage, 2.85 goals-against average. Center Jared McCann, who led the team with 61 points (22 G, 39 A) last season, has been trending towards a return from an injury that’s had him out since mid-October, but there’s no word yet on if he’ll be back on the ice for this game. The top six still has a few decent producers in Jordan Eberle (tied for team lead with 14 points), Matty Beniers (2 G, 11 A) and Jaden Schwartz (7 G, 7 A), but this team still doesn’t have that one standout forward who’ll terrify opposing blue-liners when he has the puck. The blue line is more decent than good as well, although getting Connor Bedard’s line away from Brandon Montour as much as possible would be an advantageous tactic for Chicago in this game thanks to the benefit of the last change.

Here was Seattle’s lineup from the Detroit game:

As for the Hawks, vibes remain high for this team as the wins continue to pile up and the kids continue to be the ones making those wins happen. Connor Bedard has been the most responsible party of late, notching a hat trick against Calgary in Tuesday’s win while continuing a torrid pace of 22 points (11 G, 11 A) in the last 11 games.

Chicago will receive a little boost at forward as well, with Tyler Bertuzzi expected back for this game while Jason Dickinson is still out, although his participation in the morning skate suggests his return will be arriving soon as well. Based on the morning skate lines below and Dickinson’s anticipated absence, it seems another 11F-7D lineup is on the way:

No reason to stop winning now, eh?

Let’s go Hawks.
