The Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville will rejoin the team Friday night in Pittsburgh, just one day after winning the World Cup of Hockey as an assistant coach with Team Canada.
Quenneville along with team captain Jonathan Toews and starting goaltender Corey Crawford hoisted the trophy after defeating Marian Hossa and Team Europe, 2-1, on Thursday.
Although Quenneville is joining the team it will be three or four days until Crawford, Hossa and Toews take the ice in Hawks sweaters again, assistant coach Mike Kitchen said Friday.
Toews was fourth in the tournament in scoring with three goals and two assists in six games. He’s now 47-1-1 when playing for Canada at the international level. And he’s among eight players to have won an Olympic gold medal, a Stanley Cup, a World Championship and a Canada/World Cup.
Crawford stopped 19-of-20 shots in a 4-1 win over Team Europe in the round-robin round. The one goal he allowed was to Hossa.
The Hawks are 0-1 after dropping their preseason opener, 2-0, to Pittsburgh on Wednesday at the United Center. The two teams meet again at 6:05 p.m. Friday at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
