June 3rd – Beard Of The Day – Ice Cube

Born O’Shea Jackson, once upon a time, Ice Cube was the breakout star of the fiery and controversial group N.W.A., a group that scared the ever-loving shit out of suburban parents and politicians with their openly and graphically violent and misogynistic (and awesome) lyrics, basically spawning the West Coast Gangsta Rap movement. But, Cube had too much attitude for even N.W.A., and eventually struck out on his own to create numerous essential solo recordings (most notably his first three – AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate, and The Predator).

During that time he also began to branch out into acting, with an excellent and attention-grabbing turn turn as Dough Boy in Boyz N Tha Hood. His true star-making role, however, was as the put-upon Craig Jones in Friday, and its subsequent sequels. Those led him to roles in such action tripe as XXX: State of The Union and Torque, as well as baffling roles in family films like Are We There Yet? and The Longshots. Recently, Cube has even tried his hand at filmmaking, directing an interesting piece for ESPN’s 30 At 30 series regarding the interconnectedness of the then-L.A. Raiders and rap culture. Through it all he’s consistently sported an immaculately trimmed full beard, and even though he’s softened a bit over time, he’ll always be comin’ straight outta Compton (video nowhere near SFW language-wise).
