Devils’ John Hynes named Team USA’s head coach for 2016 World Championships

John Hynes will coach Team USA at the 2016 World Championships, USA Hockey announced Friday.

Russia will host the tournament in Moscow and Saint Petersburg from May 6 through May 22. He will also serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey in September, which will be held from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

John Tortorella will be Team USA’s head coach at the World Cup of Hockey. Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane was among 16 players listed on Team USA’s initial roster for the tournament.

Hynes, 41, served six seasons as head coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program and led the U.S. to three medals at the U-18 World Championship: gold (2006), silver (2004) and bronze (2008). He was also an assistant coach for the U.S. when they won gold at the 2004 World Junior Championship.

Currently, Hynes is the youngest coach in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils. He has led the Devils to a 37-36-8 record with one game remaining in the regular season. He joined the Devils after six seasons with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. As head coach, Hynes guided the Penguins in five seasons to a 231-126-27 record with 40-plus win seasons and playoff berths every seasons. Wilkes-Barre Scranton also made back-to-back conference finals appearances.
