Blackhawks don’t have the NHL’s best-selling jersey this season

The Chicago Blackhawks didn’t have the top-selling jersey in the NHL for the 2016-17 season, a change of pace from the past couple years. This time around, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby moved the most jerseys, with Blackhawks teammates Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews coming in No. 2 and No. 3.

Last season, Toews and Kane were No. 1 and No. 2 in the jersey selling rankings. Crosby was way back at No. 8 behind Henrik Lundqvist, Patrice Bergeron, Carey Price, Alex Ovechkin, and Zach Parise. The Penguins are coming off a Stanley Cup championship, though, which presumably helped spur fans to go buy more Crosby gear.

Here’s the complete top five:

It’s pretty impressive that Auston Matthews comes in at No. 4 in his first NHL season. It’s not totally surprising given that he plays for the Maple Leafs, got drafted No. 1 overall, and stands as arguably the best young American player in the world, but it’s still a telling sign of how popular he’ll be.

One surprising absence is Oilers star Connor McDavid, who came in No. 10 during his rookie season and presumably isn’t far off from the list. McDavid was the only NHLer to reach 100 points this season as he brought Edmonton back to the playoffs, yet he couldn’t crack the top five in jersey sales.
