NHL trade rumors 2017: Hurricanes testing Teuvo Teravainen’s market, per report

The Carolina Hurricanes are “looking at what they can get for” young forward Teuvo Teravainen before the trade deadline on Wednesday, reports TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie. On a market full of fringe players and rentals, Teravainen quickly becomes one of the most interesting players in the mix.

From the Blackhawks’ perspective, the news is interesting given their history with Teravainen. He was an elite prospect in Chicago after getting selected 18th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, and contributed to the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup run in 2015 as a rookie.

His sophomore year with the Hawks didn’t blow anyone away, though, and the team packaged him with Bryan Bickell to dump that contract on the Hurricanes during the offseason.

Teravainen was thought to be a major addition for the Hurricanes as a skilled young forward coming into his own, but like in Chicago, things haven’t come together. He’s bounced between center and right wing without an obvious position, and coach Bill Peters even scratched him for a game in January.

The 22-year-old has a load of ability, and he’s producing at a decent clip with 29 points in 58 games, but the fact that the Hurricanes are already testing his trade market less than a year after acquiring him generally isn’t a great sign. And while the Blackhawks could conceivably be interested in re-acquiring him, the emergence of other young forwards in the organization makes that seem highly unlikely.
