Blackhawks fall 4-2 to Bruins, remain winless in Winter Classic games

The luck of the Irish wasn’t on the Blackhawks’ side Tuesday afternoon as they fell 4-2 to the Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium to remain winless in Winter Classic games.

Sean Kuraly scored the go-ahead goal on a rebound at 10:20 of the third period and Brad Marchand added an empty-net goal with 32.8 seconds left for Boston.

David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron also scored for the Bruins, who improve to 2-1 in Winter Classic games. Tuukka Rask made 36 saves. Boston defeated the Flyers in overtime in the 2010 edition at Fenway Park and fell to the Canadiens in 2016 at Gillette Stadium.

Brendan Perlini and Dominik Kahun scored for the Blackhawks. Cam Ward had 32 saves.

Chicago’s latest outdoor game loss comes on the 10-year anniversary of its first appearance in the annual outdoor showcase. The Blackhawks are now 0-4 in Winter Classic games and 1-5 overall in outdoor contests. They’re lone win outdoors came with a 5-1 victory over the Penguins in the 2014 Stadium Series at Solider Field in Chicago.

Perlini gave Chicago a 1-0 lead at 8:30 of the first period. David Kampf had a great defensive play behind the net to steal the puck and send it to Perlini, who was wide-open between the circles.

Pastrnak leveled the score at 12:38 on the power play.

Kahun gave the Blackhawks the lead back at 11:24 of the second period when he redirected Erik Gustafsson’s shot from the point. With a secondary assist on the goal, Jonathan Toews tied Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg for the most career points in outdoor games at seven.

Kampf looked poised to increase Chicago’s lead to two goals on a shorthanded breakaway late in the second, but Bergeron raced back and lifted Kampf’s stick for a takeaway. Bergeron scurried back to the other end of the ice and scored a power-play goal 22 seconds later to make it 2-2 with 1:12 left in the middle frame.

The Blackhawks struggled to get out of their own zone at the start of the third period, spending most of the first seven minutes killing off three penalties, including a 72-second 5-on-3. Despite killing off the penalties, they couldn’t capitalize on the momentum and Kuraly scored than less four minutes after the teams were back at even strength.

Marchand added an empty-net goal with 33 seconds remaining to make it 4-2.
