Nothing for Christmas: Senators 6, Blackhawks 4

The result was bad and the postgame news was worse!

The Blackhawks lost a high-scoring affair 6-4 on the road against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, with some postgame news that made things a little bit worse, even after Chicago’s fifth straight loss.

Ottawa had a first-period goal overturned by a Blackhawks challenge:

Chicago also challenged this Ottawa goal scored by Tyler Kleven later in the first but was not successful, giving the Senators a 1-0 lead:

The second period was wacky, mostly because of a series of potential goals and review challenges that led to this hilarity:

There were some real goals, though. First, an incredible pass from Wyatt Kaiser led to an Ilya Mikheyev breakaway goal that tied the game at one:

Later on, Tim Stutzle scored shorthanded to put the Sens up 2-1:

Andre Burakovsky tied the game at two later in the second:

Brady Tkachuk moved Ottawa back in front 3-2:

But the second period ended in a 3-3 tie thanks to this goal from Mikheyev, his second of the day:

Early in the third period, the Senators went back in front 4-3 on a David Perron goal:

Perron scored again about four minutes later:

Chicago pulled back within one when Nick Lardis scored the first NHL goal of his career at the 7:17 mark of the third:

But Fabian Zetterlund restored Ottawa’s two-goal advantage with about four mintues left in the game for the final tally of the afternoon.

I’ll be honest with ya folks: I did have some plans to write about some other items here but the Nazar injury was a little scary when it happened in real time …

… and the news got substantially worse afterwards!

That news pretty much killed my desire to write about anything else because that’s some pretty terrible news for a team that didn’t need any more of it! This game seemed like one the Blackhawks could win without Bedard, given the amount of goals they scored — the exact kind of depth scoring that’s been painfully absent in the last month. While Arvid Soderblom didn’t receive too much help from his defense in this game, there were also moments that left you thinking it would’ve been nice to get a save there. The Hawks got no such saves, and here was the result.

Now we’re looking at the next several weeks of games with no Bedard and no Nazar. That’s … no fun. Maybe this evening will offer a little more fun for those of us who root for a certain Midwestern football team that has a C at the start, an O at the end, and a HICAG in the middle. The distraction will be great because the reality of the next few weeks for this team likely won’t be too enjoyable.
