Observations From Section 321 : Birthday Beat Down

Sorry for the recap being so late but last night’s birthday celebration carried on well past the end of the game. So we are going with the Spaceballs “short, short version.” Last night’s 1st period reminded me of the last time the Hawks played a home game on March 5 back in 2010. That night they chased Roberto Luongo after scoring five goals in the opening period.

It was the Wild one scored first on Tuesday night with Devin Setogucci’s 5th goal of the year at 8:22. It did not take the Hawks very long to respond and boy did they ever answer the bell. Brandon Saad (4) tied the game at 13:02 and Bryan Bickell added his 4th goal of the year just 44 seconds later. Bickell scored a second goal at 17:12 and Marian Hossa capped off the scoring barrage with his 10th goal of the year at 18:45. Niklas Backstrom was replaced in net with Darcy Kuemper who stopped all 11 shots he saw in the 2nd period to keep the score 4-1 heading into the 3rd.

Before the final period started I had a funny feeling the Blackhawks were going let Minnesota back into the game and make us sweat it out. After all, we have seen this movie before. Ryan Suter scored his first goal in a Wild uniform with a power play goal at 3:10 to cut the lead to 4-2. Kyle Brodziak cut the Hawks lead to one with his 3rd goal of the season at 10:32. Thankfully Patrick Kane didn’t make us sweat too long as he gave the Hawks some well needed insurance with his 12th goal of the year, just 1:01 after Brodziak’s goal.

* The Blackhawks honored Marian Hossa for his 1000th game with a nice pregame ceremony and all the players wore Hossa jerseys during pregame warmups. It was a very classy move from one of the biggest class acts to ever wear the Indian Head. Well done Blackhawks.

* Dave Bolland had a bit of spring to step last night, which sitting out 5 straight games will do for you. He finished the night with an assist, 3 shots, and 2 takeaways.

* I think Brandon Saad ended Daniel Carcillo’s time on the first line with his 3 point performance. I picked the right night to buy a #20 shirtsey in the Blackhawks Store with one of my $25 United Center vouchers!

* Speaking of “Gorilla Salad” could he have been any lazier on Brodziak’s 3rd period goal? Trying to figure out exactly what he brings to this team at this point. He was pretty much invisible last night and didn’t bring any kind of physical presence, you know, the thing he is supposed to be doing.

* The Hawks won 52% of the faceoffs as a team last night. Jonathan Toews, per usual, lead the team by winning 64% of his draws. Andrew Shaw had a good night at 62% and Marcus Kruger continues his improvement by winning 7 of his 12 faceoffs. Bolland was the lowest the four centers at 44% but he was 3 out of 5 in defensive zone draws.

* And finally, to the dickbag I heard complaining about the Hawks giving away bobbleheads of a guy he’s never heard of, go Google yourself a clue jerkoff! Try looking up to the rafters the next time you at the UC and realize Pierre Pilote is one of the historic players in franchise history!
