Kane, Oesterle, DeBrincat tally assists as Team USA beats Canada 5-4

USA Hockey opened tournament play at the 2018 IIHF Men’s World Championship in Denmark against its biggest rival: Canada.

The Americans needed a shootout to do it, but they knocked off Canada 5-4 in the game.

The Chicago Blackhawks playing for Team USA were well-represented on the scoresheet. Alex DeBrincat picked up a secondary assist on Anders Lee’s first period goal, which made it a 2-1 lead for Canada late in the first period. Dylan Larkin tied things up early in the second period, with a secondary assist going to Jordan Oesterle. At the halfway point of the game, Johnny Gaudreau temporarily put the US ahead 3-2, taking in a smooth cross-ice pass from Patrick Kane and firing it into the net.

Another angle of that Kane pass, just because:

Tied at four at the end of regulation, each team had a power play in the overtime period but could not convert on it.

Connor Murphy was on the ice for Team USA during Canada’s power play and saw plenty of ice time throughout the game, as ESPN’s Chris Peters reported:

Kane was denied in his lone shootout attempt, but Cam Atkinson scored twice in the six-round shootout to give USA the victory.

Elsewhere, Blackhawks prospect Maxim Shalunov got on the scoreboard as Russia won a 7-0 blowout over France.

The goals came early and often for the Russians, with Artem Anisimov adding the final tally, off of a rebound, in typical Anisimov fashion:

Team USA faces tournament host Denmark on Sunday, while Canada faces South Korea on Sunday. Russia’s next game is against Austria on Sunday.
