For the third time since 2013, the United States has won the bronze at the IIHF World Championship.
An assist from Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane on the game-winning goal in the third period helped Team USA break a 1-1 deadlock and pull away for a 4-1 win over rival Canada.
The assist gave Kane 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in the tournament, tied with Dany Heatley for the most points in any World Championship in the last 40 years. Alex DeBrincat added an assist on Team USA’s first goal of the game during the second period and skated 13:59 of ice time. Connor Murphy did not record a point in his 12:27 of ice time, while Kane played more than any other forward at 25:51. Jordan Oesterle did not play.
Kane’s slapshot from the point off a faceoff win was deflected by Canada’s Connor McDavid. The rebound got lost in a maze of players before Nick Bonino pulled the puck out of the scrum and flipped it into the Canadian net on the backhand with 6:39 remaining in the game.

Anders Lee added an empty-net goal from about 175 feet away with 2:15 remaining to seal the victory for the U.S. Chris Kreider also scored into the empty net — his second goal of the game — to add some insurance.
