Rockford IceHogs fall 3-2 in overtime to Chicago Wolves

Dylan Coghlan scored a power-play goal 3:24 into overtime, and the Chicago Wolves (Golden Knights) rallied for a 3-2 win against the Rockford IceHogs (Blackhawks) on Sunday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

Brandon Hagel committed a hooking penalty 2:36 into overtime, and Coghlan capitalized on it with a one-timer from the top of the right circle that went off the far post and into the net.

Lucas Elvenes had three assists, and Curtis McKenzie scored two goals in the third period for the Wolves (27-26-5-3), who were winless in their previous five (0-2-2-1). Garret Sparks made 38 saves.

Philipp Kurashev and MacKenzie Entwistle each scored for Rockford (29-31-1-2), which has lost two straight (0-1-1-0) and three of its past four (1-2-1-0). Matt Tomkins made 22 saves.

The IceHogs and Wolves are tied for the fourth and final Calder Cup playoff spot with the latter having two games in hand.

Kurashev’s wrist shot from the right face-off circle redirected off Jaycob Megna’s left skate and into the net for a 1-0 lead at 3:26 of the first period.

Keegan Kolesar sent a pass below the goal line by Dennis Gilbert to the front of the net for McKenzie, who backhanded the puck over Tomkins’ right shoulder to tie it 1-1 at 3:55, then McKenzie deflected Elvenes’ shot from the left face-off circle for a power-play goal at 3:25 later for for a 2-1 lead.

Hagel sent a cross-ice pass between Megna’s legs to Entwistle, who tapped it into an empty net to tie it 2-2 at 14:02.

What’s next

The IceHogs and Wolves have almost a week off before they meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Rosemont.
