Ryan Greene showed he has a spot in future Blackhawks’ lineups

Ryan Greene wasn\'t projected to make the Chicago Blackhawks out of camp, much less spend most of this season playing next to Connor Bedard.

Prior to 2025-26, Greene was projected as a smart, detail-oriented prospect who did a lot of little things well but didn\'t possess overwhelming offensive or defensive tools. The expectation was that Greene would spend the year in Rockford, maybe bounce between the AHL and NHL, and gradually work his way into a safer bottom-six role in the coming years if things worked out. Instead, the Blackhawks ended up leaning on Greene heavily in a top-six role almost immediately. This didn\'t change his long-term projection, but it moved up the timeline and showed Greene could play in the NHL now .

By the end of the season, Greene played in 81 games, averaged just under 17 minutes a night and finished with 29 points (12 G, 17 A). Those raw numbers obviously are not what anyone would consider top-six production, especially for someone who spent much of the season attached to Bedard. But the more interesting part of Greene’s season was never really the box-score totals anyway: it was the fact that, despite difficult deployment and some pretty obvious offensive limitations, he consistently looked like he belonged in the NHL. That alone is a meaningful development for the Blackhawks.

Offensively, Greene\'s impact at even strength actually graded out above average overall, landing around the 60th percentile. There is a clear divide about where his offense came from -- assists vs. goals -- but for a rookie handling hard minutes, those are genuinely solid results. The context matters, too, because Greene was not feasting on top power-play deployment the way many productive young forwards do -- he averaged only 1:18 of power-play ice time per game -- meaning most of his offense came at 5-on-5 rather than from accumulating secondary points with elite offensive teammates on the man advantage.

Of course, the biggest question is whether Green\'s offense is sustainable or if it can even be improved upon moving forward, especially when he\'s moved to a middle or bottom-six role away from offensive juggernauts like Bedard. When you dig into his underlying habits, the answer is probably , but with the caveat that Greene will need to work on some key areas. Even if the offense can\'t be reproduced or bettered, Greene has still shown enough to be able to carve out a role in the league.

Looking at the microstats chart above, the biggest issue becomes immediately obvious: Greene barely shoots and he isn\'t a great finisher. Not only did he end up with one of the lowest shot rates on the team, he graded near the lowest league-wide percentile in overall shot generation. Not all players need to be volume shooters to be offensively successful in the NHL, but that level of shooting won\'t cut it, especially when he inevitably plays with less elite playmakers than Bedard. Naturally, such a low shot rate negatively impacted a lot of his other shooting-related metrics too, such as his overall chance contribution (which finished around the 11th percentile). Even when Bedard was consistently feeding him dangerous passes, Greene still generated shots off those looks at a well below average rate, grading around the 38th percentile in shot generation off high-danger passes.

Visually, all of this tracked with what was happening on the ice. There were plenty of games when Bedard would create chaos offensively while manipulating opposing coverage, then thread passes into dangerous areas only for Greene to fail to generate enough volume of scoring chances afterward. He wasn\'t alone in this and we could argue that Andre Burakovsky -- the most common linemate of Greene and Bedard --was even worse at that by the end of the season. But it was deflating to see Bedard\'s great passing too often end up as a dud on his linemates\' sticks, including Greene\'s. He was especially poor at generating rush shots (third percentile) despite that being the primary way Chicago scored goals this season.

Still, despite the lack of shot volume overall and finishing issues, Greene had two shooting categories where he performed quite well: he landed in the 71st percentile in one-timer generation and the 72nd percentile in creating rebounds. When the look was clean, Greene showed good instincts in timing those opportunities, and it helped that Bedard was excellent at those types of setups. Greene also demonstrated pretty strong awareness around net-front timing, often getting pucks on net specifically when teammates were in position for secondary chances. But Greene still needs to seriously increase the quantity of those shooting chances and diversify the types of shooting opportunities he has to become a legitimate scoring threat.

The good news is that Greene did much better when acting as a playmaker, primarily thanks to his intelligence. While Greene is not a particularly dynamic puck-handler or creative passer, he processes the game very well and his offensive reads were consistently smart, quick, and efficient. That showed up clearly in his playmaking metrics: Greene’s primary assist rate itself was still slightly below average in the 44th percentile, but his primary shot-assist rate jumped all the way to the 74th percentile, while his chance-assist rate landed in the 73rd percentile. He was also one of the better Blackhawks forwards at creating high-danger passes overall, grading in the 62nd percentile.

Again, Greene certainly wasn\'t carving defenses apart with deception or threading impossible passes through layers. Instead, most of his playmaking came from smart positioning, hustle, puck battles, good timing, and quick decision-making. He consistently got himself into useful areas offensively and usually identified the correct read without overcomplicating plays. For a Blackhawks team that often struggled with puck management and mentally processing plays as they developed in the offensive zone this season, Greene’s simplicity was pretty valuable.

Interestingly, Greene’s offensive profile also changed depending on whether the play occurred off the rush or developed in the offensive zone. As a shooter, Greene was better in-zone than off the rush, though neither result was especially strong. But as a playmaker, the opposite became true: his in-zone shot-assist generation graded around the 42nd percentile while his rush shot-assist generation exploded to the 82nd percentile. As has been mentioned a in a few season review articles, part of this probably reflects the broader identity of the Blackhawks just not being a very good cycle/possession team, with a lot of their offense coming through transition attacks. Still, Greene specifically looked much more comfortable creating while in motion or springing rushes for teammates.

When the game sped up through transition, Greene’s reads seemed to sharpen. He processed options quickly, delivered pucks efficiently, and supported rush attacks well. Ironically, his own rush offense only graded around the 38th percentile overall -- again because he didn\'t shoot well -- but there is enough underlying evidence here to suggest that area of his game could still grow over time, especially if Greene eventually plays with faster linemates capable of better capitalizing on his transition passing.

Honestly, Greene’s transition profile might have been the most fascinating part of his entire season, because it outlined his exact role on that line almost perfectly. His entry rate into the offensive zone was practically nonexistent, grading near the bottom percentile league-wide, but what Greene did do was all the dirty work beforehand and it showed up in his defensive zone and exit numbers.

All of that means, while Greene didn\'t carry the puck into the offensive zone very often -- Bedard, Burakovsky or other linemates who were more dynamic puck carriers typically handled that for Greene -- Greene\'s defensive-zone involvement was outstanding for a rookie forward. Greene graded in the 84th percentile in forecheck involvement, the 96th percentile in defensive-zone puck touches, and an absurd 99th percentile in retrievals leading to exits. On top of that, he posted a 95th percentile exit-attempt rate and a 99th percentile success rate on possession exits. Greene was often the forward racing back into the defensive zone, recovering dump-ins, battling along the wall, winning loose pucks, and making the first clean pass/skate out to start transition. And even though Bedard or another linemate would usually take over to enter the offensive zone, Greene was still the player often tasked with \"fetching\" the puck there as well.

That type of work is not glamorous, but it is incredibly useful, especially on a rebuilding team that spent large portions of the season trapped defensively. In many ways, Greene already looks like the kind of player who could eventually become an ideal connector piece in a middle or bottom-six: someone who helps transport the puck safely out of danger, supports transition offense, makes smart passing decisions, and allows more dynamic linemates to attack. It\'s also possible that Greene could be extremely useful on a shutdown/checking line where flipping the ice to get better teammates on, similar to Marcus Kruger or possibly even Dave Bolland, considering there may be some offense in Greene\'s game.

That brings us to the defensive side of Greene\'s performance where his numbers were obviously bleak due to the team-wide issues but where he was quite steady at an individual level throughout the season. He was not overwhelmingly physical or dominant in isolation, but his positioning, awareness, and overall structure were consistently solid. He tracked responsibly through the neutral zone, supported low in the defensive zone, and generally looked trustworthy in difficult situations. More importantly, the coaching staff clearly believed he could handle those responsibilities because his deployment never really softened as the season went along, despite moving around the lineup after the trade deadline.

Another part of what made Greene’s season encouraging was that he survived in situations that should have exposed him. The Blackhawks gave him pretty difficult competition almost all year because of his role alongside Bedard, with Greene facing a quality of competition that was roughly in the 71st percentile league-wide. He was not being sheltered against weak depth lines or insulated in easy offensive situations. Rookies do not accidentally spend most of the year playing difficult minutes unless coaches believe they can survive them.

Ultimately, this season was already a pretty meaningful success story for both Greene and the Blackhawks organization, because he proved he can play and play well in the NHL, even if he really shouldn\'t be on the top line long-term. There is a tendency during rebuilds to evaluate young players entirely through the lens of upside, with fans understandably focusing on who could become stars or eventual top-six fixtures. Greene currently doesn\'t project as that type of player in the future, especially on a contending team, but that does not diminish the value of what he showed this season. Players who can competently handle difficult minutes, support transition play, defend responsibly, and chip in secondary offense still matter quite a bit, especially when they can do it as young players against legitimate competition.

Greene may never become one of the faces of the rebuild, but he increasingly looks like the kind of smart, reliable complementary piece that winning teams need around their stars.
