SCH Ice Cold Podcast Episode 16: The offseason so far

After jettisoning both Teuvo Teravainen and now Andrew Shaw, where do the Blackhawks stand? The draft and free agent period still has the league gasping for breath. Robert and Adam ponder how the Hawks will replace Shaw, fan perception on trades, express concern or lack thereof over Brian Campbell’s return and role, among many points.

The overall rundown:

  • Hawks trade Andrew Shaw to the Canadiens for two second round picks. Are the Facebook hate comments over losing him justified? How can Chicago replace him? (Maintain perspective here)
  • Noted smaller stud Alex Debrincat falls to the Hawks at 39 in the draft (thank you Shaw!), and defenseman Chad Krys is taken at 45 with the other. Are these guys in better position to make an impact sooner rather than later? (Probably) Is judging Debrincat based off of his linemates and size, fair?
  • Brian Campbell makes his triumphant return to Chicago on a one year (basically) $2.25 million dollar deal.
  • Should there be concern over whether the 37 year old is the be all end all solution to defensive issues? What to expect from the new logjam defensively.
  • The NHL collectively faints in a 30 minute span last Wednesday, as Steven Stamkos returns to Tampa, Taylor Hall is traded, and the elephant in the room, the Canadiens actually trade PK Subban (REALLY?).
  • Not to gloss over the other huge moves, but what does the Subban trade mean for the league in on ice and off ice terms? Likely no fix to this deep seeded culture. (Also probably why Canada hasn’t won a Cup in forever)
  • Where do the Predators now stand in terms of contention? (Spoiler: They’re pretty good)
  • Finally in TV, the Office is better than Parks and Recreation, and there are plenty of ice cold take reasons why. (Don’t ask questions!)
