Notes:
- Jeremy Morin, Jimmy Hayes, Brandon Pirri and Ben Smith, who recently returned from injury, have been playing very well down in Rockford by all accounts. If the Hawks lock up a playoff spot early, it might not be a bad idea to get these guys some playing time with the big club.
- Phillip Danault has been sensational since being traded to the Moncton Wildcats at the QMJHL trade deadline, with 33 points in just 20 games. Moncton gave up a ton to get Danault (including two 1st round picks) which shows how highly he's valued in that league. Danault has always been a strong two-way player but there's been some huge improvement in his offensive game this season, which is very encouraging. Danault and the Wildcats looked poised to make a Memorial Cup run this year.
- Garret Ross, a 5th round pick last year, is having a heck of a year in Saginaw, with 83 points in 55 games. The similarities between Ross and Andrew Shaw are striking: both were drafted 139th overall in their 3rd year of eligibility and both players are undersized agitators with underrated offensive skill. Look for Ross to get a pro contract at some point this year.
- Kevin Hayes' production, or lack thereof, is cause for concern. The 2010 1st round pick in his junior year only has 6 goals in 27 games with Boston College. By most accounts his development is still on track but I fear his ceiling might be a bit lower than initially thought.
- As mentioned here last week, Mac Carruth is having a strong season in Portland. Meanwhile, Kent Simpson is having a decent season in Toledo. Couple of really good goalie prospects.
