Second City Hockey is looking for new writers, editors

UPDATE: Hey everyone, thank you to those who applied! Both paid positions have been filled, although we are still open to applications for unpaid writers for those who are interested. My apologies if I didn’t get back to your email, we were unable to respond to everyone due to the volume of applications we received. We appreciate your interest!

The 2016-17 NHL season is closing in and that means it’s time for Second City Hockey to go into overdrive. As such, we’re looking for several new people to join our team and help take our coverage of the Chicago Blackhawks to the next level.

Whether it’s hardcore statistical analysis, gameday coverage, discussing hockey culture off the ice or something else entirely, we need people who love hockey and want to share that with the world. With nearly 7M in pageviews over the past year, we also offer a huge, growing audience as part of SB Nation.

These are great opportunities for passionate fans and aspiring journalists, plus you get to work with me. I’LL BRING DOUGHNUTS TO THE SLACK ROOM.

And more than that, I’m also happy to announce we’re offering two paid positions that will include monthly stipends. We’ll be able to offer more details to applicants who get further into the process, but these positions will involve more responsibility than non-paying gigs. In exchange, you’ll get some beer money — sorry, think beer money, not rent money — for your hard work in addition to getting your name out there and all that good stuff. There will be requirements for paid positions — for example, you’ll need to post a certain amount of times per week, as per our agreements.

Here are the PAID positions we’re looking for:

  • Game day coverage and analysis writer: Perfect for someone who watches most of the Hawks games anyway, we’re looking for a writer/editor to help with previews, recaps and in-game coverage. Being comfortable with advanced stats and writing with a sense of humor are preferred, but not required. Ability to write clean copy quickly is also preferred.
  • Associate editor & columnist: SCH could use another unique voice to do analysis and commentary on hockey news, but in addition, we’re looking for someone with a background in blogging/journalism who can help with coverage when other editors are busy. This job will largely involve writing analysis/commentary pieces for the site, although it will also mean ocassionally helping with breaking news, social media, copy editing and other aspects of running the site as needed. /

In addition to those two paid positions, which will involve signing a freelance contractor contract with Vox Media, Inc., we’re also looking for unpaid writers to help out in all sorts of ways, too. Here are a few things we’re also looking for that we unfortunately cannot pay for right now:

  • Rockford IceHogs writer: Help keep SCH readers up to date with what’s happening at Chicago’s AHL affiliate. Ideally this person would be located in Rockford so we could attempt to arrange press credentials to attend games.
  • Blackhawks columnists: Got ideas for great articles to write about the Hawks? Think there’s some aspect of coverage that SCH is falling short in right now? We’re always looking for compelling writers who can tackle topics like analytics, in-game strategies and anything else. Ability to effectively use GIFs/video in your work is a plus.
  • Morning Bag Skate writer: Brandon, bless his soul, does the Morning Bag Skate just about every morning, but he could always use some help here. The MBS is a link roundup of what we deem worthwhile to pass on to our readers each morning, and it also serves as a congregating hub for the community to discuss the day’s happenings. We really could use someone to help with this, even in a part-time role like on weekends.
  • Social media: We tend to do a pretty good job when it comes to Twitter, but we could use another person to help take our overall social media coverage, especially Instagram, to another level. If you’re a huge Hawks fan who loves social media and has a good sense of humor, this could be a great opportunity./

Non-paid positions could eventually lead to paid opportunities, although there will be no promises or guarantees made to anyone on that front. The benefit of non-paid positions is that there’s no demand on how much you’ll need to write for us unless you’ve agreed to regularly scheduled posts, so there’s much more flexibility.

If you think you’re a good fit, please send an email to secondcityhockey@gmail.com with your name, the position (or positions) you’d like to apply for, and some examples of your past writing (ideally about hockey). Additionally, bonus points for including your SCH screenname or Twitter handle if you have them. We will contact you if there’s mutual interest.

Each application will be given equal consideration, and we encourage a diverse group of applicants, so please contact us if you’re interested. Come have fun with us this season.
