Blackhawks hire Sheldon Brookbank as Rockford IceHogs assistant coach

Sheldon Brookbank is rejoining the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks hired Brookbank on Wednesday as an assistant coach for the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s American Hockey League team. Brookbank will serve on new coach Jeremy Colliton’s staff with NHL veteran Derek King.

Brookbank, 36, signed a two-year free agent contract with Chicago in July 2012 then went on to win the Stanley Cup with the team in 2013. The defenseman scored three goals and eight points in 74 games across two seasons with Chicago. He added two assists in eight playoff games during those two seasons.

The Hawks let Brookbank walk and he signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL in October. He stayed overseas with Lukko in Finland’s Liiga before joining Columbus’ AHL affiliate in Cleveland for six games last season.

Brookbank played in 351 career NHL games and posted seven goals and 44 points, along with 473 penalty minutes during parts of eight seasons with Nashville, New Jersey, Anaheim and Chicago from 2006-14.
