Former Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg named to Swedish Olympic team
Stalberg joins several other ex-Hawks heading to Pyeongchang.
Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg has been named to the Swedish team for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The roster was announced Tuesday for the tournament in Pyeongchang, which will run from Feb. 9-25.
A number of former Blackhawks will be playing in the Olympics as a result of the NHL’s decision not to participate.
Rene Bourque, Andrew Ebbett, and Rob Klinkhammer, all members of Team Canada, will be familiar to fans who followed the Hawks in the mid-to-late 2000s. James Wisniewski, who started his career in Chicago, will be part of Team USA’s defense. Jiri Sekac, a short-lived member of the Blackhawks in 2016, made the Czech Republic’s team.
Stalberg, 31, has been playing for EV Zug in Switzerland after departing the NHL last summer. He’s recorded 18 goals and 23 assists in 35 games, which is good for the fifth-best point total in the NLA. Two of the players ahead of him (Ebbett, Garrett Roe) will also be in the Olympics.
So there will be guys you’re familiar with in Pyeongchang. Just not the likes of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, etc.
