Teuvo Teravainen day-to-day with upper body injury

The odds of Teuvo Teravainen making the Blackhawks out of training camp probably took a hit this weekend as the well-regarded prospect suffered a minor upper body injury on Saturday. It’s not considered serious and he’s being labeled as day-to-day, but after an impressive showing early on at camp, he’s not even taking the ice on Sunday.

As ESPN Chicago’s Scott Powers reports, Teravainen played in the team’s scrimmages Saturday and did take a major hit from defenseman Cam Barker (damnit Cam, c’mon dude). He didn’t miss any shifts on the ice or mention the injury to reporters afterwards, but it’s possible he was simply working through the pain before the team decided to be more cautious.

The Blackhawks have one more scrimmage on Monday before starting the preseason on Tuesday against the Red Wings. Teravainen was already considered something of a longshot to make the NHL team out of training camp, so this absence likely increases the possibility that he starts the season in Rockford.

There’s been lots of good news out of the University of Notre Dame so far, but this certainly qualifies as a less-than-ideal development. Here’s to hoping Teravainen doesn’t suffer any setbacks and returns to the ice ASAP.
