Blackhawks trade Tommy Wingels to Bruins for draft pick

The Chicago Blackhawks traded forward Tommy Wingels to the Boston Bruins for a 2019 conditional fifth-round pick before the NHL trade deadline, the teams announced Monday. The draft pick moves up to the fourth round if the Bruins reach the second round of the 2018 playoffs or Wingels re-signs in Boston this offseason.

The move was first reported by 670 The Score’s Jay Zawaski. His tweet came not long after Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the two sides were discussing a deal.

Wingels will provide the Bruins the same depth that he afforded the Blackhawks. He’s a versatile forward who works hard and seems well-liked in the locker room. This February, he was Chicago’s rep for Hockey Is For Everyone month.

A trade isn’t remotely surprising, however, given that he’s a veteran forward on a cheap one-year contract. The Hawks were able to snag a fifth-round pick in return for him, which adds to their coffers after acquiring Nashville’s first-round pick in the Ryan Hartman deal.

The Blackhawks now have eight picks in the 2018 NHL Draft and nine picks in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Wingels recorded seven goals and five assists in 57 games with the Blackhawks this season. He’s primarily played fourth-line center, but also got looks on the wings at times. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Wilmette, Ill., native considers signing with the Hawks again as a free agent this summer.
