Viktor Svedberg assigned to Rockford after clearing waivers

The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned defenseman Viktor Svedberg to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs after he cleared waivers, the team announced Monday. There are now 20 forwards, 12 defensemen, and three goalies on the Blackhawks’ active roster.

Svedberg was placed on waivers by Chicago on Sunday, and all 30 teams passed on claiming him. The 6’8 defenseman didn’t really stand a chance of making the Hawks’ roster out of training camp given how many players stood in front of him on the depth chart.

The IceHogs will be getting Svedberg’s services for a fifth season, as he’s spent most of his career in the minors. During the 2015-16 season, he played 27 games for the Blackhawks, but his lack of mobility was exposed as he finished with just two goals and two assists.

In 175 games with Rockford, Svedberg has eight goals and 49 points. Now 26 years old, he’s no longer a prospect, and may just end up being an AHL lifer.
