Watch: Alex DeBrincat scores his 1st NHL goal of the preseason

Alex DeBrincat scored his first NHL goal of the preseason in the second period against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday at United Center.

DeBrincat, the Hawks’ 2016 second-round draft pick, was set up by a takeaway from Nick Schmaltz, who sent the puck to Richard Panik before finding DeBrincat for the power-play goal.

DeBrincat, 19, started the game at left wing on the Hawks’ second line alongside Schmaltz at center and Patrick Kane. The thought going into the preseason was Patrick Sharp would man the second line left-wing spot until DeBrincat proved himself with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL. However, performances like this show DeBrincat, who won the Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League’s most outstanding player a season ago, might be ready to crack the opening-night roster.
