World Juniors: Team USA to play Czech Republic in quarterfinals

Team USA will play Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the 2016 World Junior Championship at noon CT on Saturday. The game will be broadcasted on NHL Network.

Here are the quarterfinal match ups:

  • Denmark vs. Russia (Group B winner) at 6 a.m.
  • Sweden (Group A winner) vs. Slovakia at 8 a.m.
  • Canada vs. Finland (Group B 2nd place) at 10 a.m.
  • USA (Group A 2nd place) vs. Czech Republic at Noon/

All games will be broadcasted on NHL Network.

The Americans finished in second place in Group A behind Sweden, who beat the U.S. 1-0. Auston Matthews led the U.S. with four goals and a 3-0-0-1 record and nine points in the preliminary round. Matthews’ four goals leads the tournament, and he’s recorded a point in every game except against Sweden.

Alexander Nedeljkovic went 2-1 in net for the Americans, allowing three goals before being pulled for Brandon Halverson before the midway point of the second period in a 10-1 rout of Switzerland. Halverson stopped every shot in a 32-minute relief appearance and allowed the lone goal in the U.S. 4-1 win over Denmark on Thursday.

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Nick Schmaltz, a 2014 first-round pick, tallied a goal and assist in the victory over Switzerland.

The Americans have outscored its opponent’s 19-3, and have not given up more than two goals in a game.

The Czechs were dealt the draw with the Americans after falling to host Finland, 5-4, who took second place in Group B. After dropping their opener, 2-1 in a shootout to Russia, the Czechs defeated Slovakia, 2-0, and Belarus, 5-3.
