World Juniors 2019: Blackhawks’ Philipp Kurashev, Switzerland fall 5-2 to Russia in bronze-medal game

Blackhawks forward prospect Philipp Kurashev and Switzerland fell 5-2 to Russia in the bronze-medal game at the World Junior Championship tournament on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

Kirill Slepets scored a hat trick, including a shorthanded goal with an empty net. The 2019 NHL draft eligible forward had five goals and seven points in the tournament.

Nikita Shashkov and Klim Kostin (Blues) each tallied once for Russia, who improved to 8-0 in bronze-medal games. Goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 34 shots.

Valentin Nussbaumer and Yannick Bruschweiler both scored for Switzerland in the second period. Gaolie Luca Hollenstein made 19 saves.

The Swiss entered the game with a chance to medal for only the second time in tournament history since winning bronze in 1998.

Kurashev’s biggest chance to score his seventh goal of the tournament came in the closing minute of the first period. He also had a prime chance midway through the third period on the power play with a one-timer from the right face off circle.

Kurashev scored a tournament-leading six goals with an assist to pace all Chicago and Swiss players in scoring. He also had a tournament-high 28 shots on goal.
