Blackhawks’ Brent Seabrook declines to waive no-movement clause, per report

Brent Seabrook wants to finish his career with the Blackhawks.

During Saturday night’s “Headlines” segment on Hockey Night in Canada, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported the Blackhawks asked Seabrook about waiving his no-movement clause for the right situation, but the defenseman said no.

“The Blackhawks have gone to Brent Seabrook and said would he’d be willing to waive his no-move clause. To this point, he has said, ‘no.’ He loves being a Blackhawk and he does not want to do that. But I think, they might still check around to see the market,” Friedman said.

Seabrook, who turns 34 in April, has five years remaining on his contract after this season that carries a $6.875 million annual salary cap hit. The contract carries a full NMC until the 2022-23 season, when it includes a modified no-trade clause that he can submit a five-team trade list then a 10-team trade list in the final year of his deal.

Seabrook, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Blackhawks, has 100 goals and 352 points in 1,055 games with Chicago since being drafted by the franchise with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2003 NHL draft. He has five goals and 15 assists in 51 games this season.

The Blackhawks look like they’ll miss the playoffs for a second straight year barring a stellar run down the stretch. After their 4-3 overtime win Saturday night in Minnesota, they’re in 28th place in the 31-team league with 49 points, which puts them six points clear of last-place Ottawa and five points back of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
