Blackhawks By The Numbers Regular Season Review

The Playoffs are upon us so let’s take a look at how each of the Blackhawks players fared over the season by the numbers. Season long charts below are for CF% at 5v5 for each player. I created these charts using data from www.extraskater.com and used a 5 game moving average to show the season long progression of each player. The tables for each player covers TOI/60 (Time on Ice per 60 minutes), goals, assists, P/60 (Points per 60), Pen+/- (penalty differential), CF% Close (Corsi For % at Score Close) and CF% Rel Close (Corsi For % Relative to Team Mates at Score Close). This data was collected from www.extraskater.com and stats.hockeyanalysis.com . Following the tables of information, there are heat charts showing Shots and Goals for the Defensemen and Goals (even strength, power play and short handed) for the Forwards which were taken from www.sportingcharts.com using their Ice Tracker feature. The Blackhawks Player Usage Chart below from www.extraskater.com shows how unique the team is. The checking line of Bollig, Kruger and Smith took the vast majority of the defensive zone starts throughout the season and faced tougher competition on a regular basis than any other “4th line” in the league.

The Toews line faced the toughest competition on a regular basis but were also used in an optimized role in that they were able to start from the neutral zone and offensive zone more frequently. Their offense was also enhanced by being paired with the Keith – Seabrook defensive tandem more often than not. Hjalmarsson and Oduya faced the toughest competition in their shutdown role and other analysis I have seen points to them as having the toughest defensive assignments in the league. The other thing that really sticks out about the Blackhawks player usage is that all of the players’ circles are blue. This indicates that all of the Blackhawks players have a CF% (Corsi For %) at 5v5 at or above 50%. This means that all of the players have the puck more often than their opponents. As you would probably guess, this is very rare throughout the league.
