Dominik Kahun is a discipline player that doesn’t want to put his teammates in a bind.
But Monday night at the United Center, the first-year winger did just that as he committed his first penalty in his NHL career in the second period against the Senators. The Blackhawks, however, did kill off the penalty.
Kahun had previously gone 59 games and 857:36 minutes without doing so, a streak that came close to eclipsing Gerry Melnyk’s franchise record mark of 62 games in 1961-62.
Kahun’s streak without committing a penalty should come as no surprise. The 23-year-old served only 16 penalty minutes in 157 regular-season games across four seasons with EHC Red Bull Munich in Germany.
Kahun was the last player in the NHL this season to commit a penalty that played in every game for his team. Craig Ramsay (1973-74) of the Sabres is the last player to have gone a full season without committing penalty and play in every game.
