Chicago Blackhawks prospect John Dahlström was selected with the No. 76 overall pick in the second round by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft on Tuesday.
Dahlström, 19, was selected by the Hawks with the final pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 187-pound winger scored 21 goals and 35 points in 38 games for Frölunda HC J20 in Sweden. The season before he led the same league with 20 goals in 28 games.
Dahlström has also represented Sweden at the international level at the World Junior Championships and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He recorded a goal and an assist in three games at the WJC, and he had two assists in five games at the Hlinka Tournament.
Each year, every team in the CHL has the option to select two players from outside North America. Medicine Hat finished last season with a 30-37-3-2 record and missed the WHL playoffs after dropping the Eastern Conference tiebreaker to Edmonton.
If Dahlström does head to Medicine Hat, he’ll join Radovan Bondra (WHL Vancouver), Alex DeBrincat (OHL Erie), Graham Knott (OHL Niagara), Nathan Nole (QMJHL Saint Johns) and Roy Radke (OHL Barrie) as Hawks’ prospects in the CHL.
