The Chicago Blackhawks have signed goaltender Mac Carruth to a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday. Carruth was set to become a restricted free agent and receives a two-way deal that will pay an NHL salary of $575,000 and an AHL salary of $90,000.
Carruth split the 2015-16 season between the ECHL’s Indy Fuel and AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. In 25 games with the Fuel, he recorded a 2.43 goals against average and .918 save percentage. In 17 regular-season games with the IceHogs, Carruth had a 2.30 GAA and .926 save percentage. He struggled badly in the AHL playoffs, however, posting a 4.53 GAA and .854 save percentage in three losses.
The Hawks have already filled out much of their goaltending depth chart for next season with the signings of Carruth and 28-year-old Swedish goalie Lars Johansson. Corey Crawford and Scott Darling will presumably again be the two goalies at the NHL level, while Carruth and Johansson will be among those to fill the minutes in Indy and Rockford.
Carruth was drafted by Chicago in the seventh round (No. 191 overall pick) of the 2010 NHL Draft. He has never played for the Blackhawks.
