Teuvo Teravainen will return to the United Center for the first time since being traded by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Carolina Hurricanes this offseason when the team’s meet Friday in Chicago.
Teravainen played a key role in the Blackhawks’ 2015 Stanley Cup run. He enters the matchup with a five-game point streak, and has tallied nine goals and 11 assists in 37 games for Carolina this season. He won’t be the only former Blackhawk in the opposing sweater as defenseman Klas Dahlbeck and forwards Joakim Nordstrom and Viktor Stalberg will also be in the lineup.
The Hawks (24-12-5) snapped a two-game losing streak Thursday with Patrick Kane’s game-winning goal in overtime to lift Chicago to a 4-3 win over Buffalo. Kane has regained the team’s scoring lead from linemate Artemi Panarin with 40 points, which ranks him fifth in the NHL.
Artem Anisimov scored twice, including the goal that sent the game to overtime, and is tied for seventh in the NHL with 18 goals scored. He’s only four goals shy of matching his career high of 22, set during the 2013-14 season with Columbus.
Scott Darling will start in net for Chicago. Darling stopped 25 of 28 shots in a 3-2 loss last week in Carolina. He’s 10-4-2 with a 2.39 goals-against average and .921 save percentage this season. But his best performance come in front of the home crowd, posting a 6-2-1 mark with a 2.09 GAA, .933 save percentage and one shutout.
Like the Hawks, Carolina is coming off a win the previous night that snapped a two-game skid. Jeff Skinner scored the go-ahead goal as the Hurricanes pulled away with a 4-2 victory in St. Louis. Skinner leads the Hurricanes in goals (14) and Victor Rask also has reached double–digits (10).
Cam Ward could start his second game in net in as many nights. Ward made 21 saves for the win. If he sits, former Hawk Michael Leighton would make his third start for Carolina. The 35-year-old has a 3.53 GAA and .875 save percentage in two contests this season.
In the first meeting between the two teams, Carolina held on for a 3-2 win. Elias Lindholm, Lee Stempniak and Jay McClement scored for Carolina. Chicago received goals from Michal Kempny and Vinnie Hinostroza, who skated with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa for much of the third period Thursday. Spencer Abbott skated 8:34 in his Hawks debut on the top line, but was demoted in favor of Hinostroza.
