Blackhawks prospect Kirby Dach wears No. 77 for ‘double the luck’

The Blackhawks’ newest prospect Kirby Dach stands out on the ice with his 6-foot-4 frame.

But there’s something else that stands about him — his number. Dach worn No. 77, an uncommon number in the hockey world, with the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL.

Like many players — regardless of sport — the story behind why he wears it is simple. His first choice was taken.

“I worn 7 as a kid growing up all the time and when I got to Saskatoon it was retired (for Gerry Pinder), so I went to 77 for double the luck,” Dach said on NBC Sports Chicago’s Hawks Talk Podcast.

Dach plans to keep No. 77 with the Blackhawks because once again it’s already taken. He’ll be only the second player in franchise history to wear it, joining Paul Coffey who played in 10 games during the 1998-99 season.

“Seven is kinda occupied by (Brent) Seabrook, so I’m not looking to pick a fight with any teammates so I’m thrilled to be wearing 77 and it has treated me well in Saskatoon.”
